Today's budding Itzhak Perlman has an incredible choice when it comes to electric violins.  They come in two main kinds.  The first, the acoustic electric violins, is a hollow-body violin fitted with some kind of electrical sound pickup while the second is made out of solid material, kind of like an electric guitar's (in fact, fender electric violins are available and quite popular) to prevent problems due to feedback.  Since a violin's sound is dependent on the resonances generated by its body shape and material, an electric violin often sounds different from an acoustic one, but this difference is desirable for certain genres.

There are many kinds of electric violins for sale.  Some - 5 string electric violins - have an extra string that is tuned for low C and is more commonly found on solid-body instruments than hollow ones.  The more avant-garde designs include anything from unusual body shapes and shapes, like black electric violins, to dispensing with the strings or bows altogether in favor of tape-head pickups and MIDI processing and polyphony.
